MEDIA ARRANGEMENTS

Media Accreditation:

Correspondents accredited to the United Nations need no further accreditation.

Media representatives wishing to cover this Conference should complete the accreditation request form and send a letter of assignment from their Bureau Chief, or Assignment Editor to Chief Media Accreditation and Liaison Unit News and Media Division Department of Public Information (DPI), United Nations, New York 10017, prior to 21 August. All members of the press accompanying delegations must complete the accreditation form and attach official letter from their national parliament. After there arrival they should go to:

Passes will be issued upon presentation of two pieces of photo identification (such as passport, national press credentials, police press pass, driver's license, etc.).

From 28 August - 1 September the office will be open from Monday through Friday from 9 am - 5 pm. Closed 1-2 pm.

Entry and Screening Procedures:

The designated press entrance is through the Visitors' entrance on First Avenue and 46th Street.

For entry into the building, all members of the press corps will be required to wear a valid United Nations pass and have it visible for the United Nations Security Officers at the gate.

United Nations Security Officers will direct all media representatives through Visitors' Lobby and to escalator to the third floor of the General Assembly building and to the third floor Press Area of the Secretariat Building.

Media Centre and Other Facilities:

On the third floor landing there will be a staffed Media Liaison Desk from where media will be directed to the:

  • Working area in the Ex-Press Bar
  • Fourth floor Press Gallery
  • General Assembly Hall to gain access to photo and TV booths

The Ex-Press Bar will serve as an overflow area for the press corps, particularly the official photographers and cameramen waiting to enter the booth assigned to them. They are only allowed to film from designated booths. No still photographers or camera crews are allowed inside the fourth floor gallery. The only place from where a direct photo of the podium can be taken is the "press bridge" directly opposite the podium, where a Liaison Officer will accompany them. Access to the bridge it will be on a rotating basis. (For those wishing to take a picture from the "bridge, it is suggested that they bring 400/600 mm lens)

Additional areas are available for use by media:

  • Press Documents Distribution counter - will provide press releases and speeches as they become available
  • Third floor in the Secretariat (known as the "bullpen")
  • The MCI area adjacent to the bullpen
  • For live or delayed feeds of material, radio journalists should contact the Broadcast Center. Telephone: 1(212) 963-7656/2998/4004. Specific bookings of this facility should be made to Ms. Rosita Jacobson 1(212) 963-7458.

The facilities available to the press in the bullpen will include telephones, computers, and electric outlet for laptops (bring modems). The MCI offices provide the only access to fax machines and it is available on a commercial basis.

The Ex-Press Bar and the bullpen will be equipped with "sound distribution boxes" from where media can record proceedings. In these areas TV monitors covering the sittings will also be available.

Other Arrangements:

The President of the IPU Council and the Secretary General of the IPU will greet the Presiding Officers in the Delegates Lounge. There will be access to still photographers from major news organizations to cover this event. Should national photographers wish to take shots of any bilateral meetings they can do so prior notification to UN Media Liaison Desk, ext. 3-7756 or 3-3353.

The media will have access to the "stakeout area" at the delegates' entrance during the hour immediately prior to the inaugural session.
