Mosé Tjitendero was a leader in the resistance movement that led Namibia to independence in 1989. He was first elected Speaker of the National Assembly in 1990, a post he held for three consecutive terms until 2004. Earlier, he had received his PhD from Massachusetts University and taught at the United Nations Institute for Namibia and directed its Vocational and Training Centre in Angola until independence.

Mosé Tjitendero was a charismatic and dynamic individual who took a very active part in the work of the IPU. He brought the IPU to Namibia where he hosted the 99th Conference in 1998. He later was elected to IPU's Executive Committee, where he also held the posts of Vice-President and Rapporteur on IPU reform.

Mosé will be sorely missed by his many friends and parliamentary colleagues in every corner of the world.
