Purpose of elections:
	Elections were held for all seats in the Parliament on the normal expiry of the members' term of office.
Background and outcome of elections:
	On 4 March 2001, Andorrans went to the polls to elect the 28 members of the Consell General, the unicameral legislature. This was the third election since 1993, when Andorra enacted a new Constitution doing away with 700 years of a system that had vested authority in the hands of two co-princes: the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Spanish town of Seu d'Urgell and the President of France. The contest was basically between the Liberal Party, led by the Head of Government Mr Marc Forné, and Mr Jaume Bartummeu's Social Democratic Party. The other contestant at the national level was the Democratic Party. For the last two parties, this was the first time they had participated in an electoral race. Among the promises made by the parties during the electoral campaign were the construction of a subway to end Andorra's traffic problems and support for the country's bid to host a future Winter Olympics. Official turnout was reported at 81.6% of the more than 13,000 eligible voters. Results showed that the outgoing governing party, the Liberal Party, had won 15 seats against six for the Social Democratic Party and five for the Democratic Party. The Unió Laurediana won the remaining two seats. On 5 April 2001, Mr Marc Forné was sworn in for a new term of office as Head of Government.
