Elections were held for one-half (127) of the seats of the Chamber of Deputies on the normal expiry of the members’ term of office. In addition, five Deputies were elected in a new district - Tierra del Fuego - thus bringing the total membership of the Chamber to 259. | |

The Chamber of Deputies mid-term elections were spread over four months for political reasons; polling days were 11 August, 8 September, 27 October and 1 December 1991. As before, the main opponent of the ruling Justicialist Party (PJ) was the Radical Civic Union (UCR). Voting was for one-half (127) of the Deputies’ seats, plus five more from a new province, Tierra del Fuego and Islas del Atlantico Sur (a former national territory). Provincial and local officials were simultaneously chosen.
Final results, giving the Peronist PJ an overall gain in seats, were generally felt to reflect popular support for the economic reform policies (especially privatisation and deregulation) advocated by the administration of President of the Republic (since July 1989) Carlos Menem, particularly the plan devised by Economy Minister D. Cavallo that had brought inflation under control and stabilized the economic sector. The President characterized the results “as a vote of confidence for the Government’s economic, political and social policies”. UCR, led by former President Raul Alfonsin, emerged with a net loss of five seats. |
