Chamber:
  House of Representatives

Dates of elections / renewal (from/to):

  30 June 1993

Purpose of elections:

Elections were held for all the seats in the House of Representatives following premature dissolution of this body 15 months before normal expiry of its term. General elections had previously taken place in September 1989.

Background and outcome of elections:

Prime Minister (at independence in 1981) George Price called the premature general elections to seek a new mandate after Great Britain confirmed that if was decreasing its military presence in its former colony of British Honduras and the president of Belize’s often hostile neighbour, Guatemala, was forced out of office by the military. The latter had traditionally been the strongest proponents of Guatemala’s territorial claims on Belize. As usual, the main contestants in the 1993 legislative elections were Mr. Price’s ruling People’s United Party (PUP) and the somewhat-divided United Democratic Party (UDP), headed by Mr. Manuel Esquivel. On polling day, the conservative UDP turned the tables on the labour-oriented PUP, picking up three additional seats to arrive at an absolute parliamentary majority of 16.

On 2 July, Mr. Esquivel was sworn in for a second term (after 1984-1989) as Prime Minister. Three days later, a new 15-member Cabinet was named.
