Chamber:
  House of Representatives

Dates of elections / renewal (from/to):

  27 August 1998

Purpose of elections:

Elections were held for all the seats in the House of Representatives on the normal expiry of the members' term of office.

Background and outcome of elections:

As at the previous elections in 1993, the main contending parties for the 29 House seats were the ruling United Democratic Party (UDP) and the opposition People’s United Party (PUP); both were considered centrist groups. Campaign debate focused largely on economic issues. In this connection, the PUP pledged, among other things, to remove the 1996 value-added-tax and to create 15,000 new jobs as part of a development programme.

On a polling day marked by a large turnout, the PUP, led by Mr. Said Musa, swept to a landslide victory, picking up 13 additional seats to leave the UDP of Prime Minister Manuel Esquivel with only three. As a result, Mr. Musa was sworn in as Prime Minister on 28 August and the new PUP Cabinet on 1 September.
