Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament on the normal expiry of the members’ term of office. | |

The general elections were held against a background of plans to speed up economic reform and encourage wider opening up to the outside world with a view to ensuring political stability and economic prosperity.
Polling results saw the Communist Party filling 68.4% of the seats (2,037). The minority nationalities returned 436 members. Only 28.8% of Deputies of the former legislature (860) were re-elected. The first plenary session of the Eighth National People’s Congress (NPC) was held from 15 to 31 March 1993, during which a 134-member Standing Committee was elected. Mr. Qiao Shi was elected its Chairman. The NPC also elected Mr. Jiang Zemin as President of the Republic while Mr. Li Peng was elected as Premier of the State Council (Prime Minister). Among other decisions, the NPC adopted Premier Li Peng’s report on the work of the Government, as well as other reports on the work of various State bodies. Constitutional amendments were also approved. |
