Elections were held for the 56 members of Parliament representing the Greek-Cypriot community on the normal expiry of their term of office. | |

During the 27 May 2001 elections, some 467,000 voters were called on to choose from among 454 candidates (eight political parties and six independents) for the 56 seats allocated to the Greek-Cypriot Community. As voting is obligatory by law (failure to vote without providing reasonable justification is punishable by a fine), more than 90 per cent of the voters turned out to cast their votes.
The electoral campaign did not have the 27-year-old Cyprus problem as its main bone of contention, as had been the case until now. Instead, candidates focused on the accession of Cyprus to the European Union, as the island is the most advanced of the 13 countries currently seeking EU admission. The results showed that the Communist Akel party had won the largest number (20) of the 56 seats at stake. The other seats were won by the right-wing Democratic Rally (DISY), which obtained 19, the centrist Democratic Party (DIKO), which won 9, the Movement of Social Democrats (KISOS) 4, while the remaining four went to the right-wing New Horizons, the Liberal United Democrats, the centre-right ADIK and the Ecologist Movement. This is the first time that the Ecologist Movement is being represented in Parliament. During the inaugural session of the House of Representatives on 7 June 2001, the leader of Akel, Mr Dimitris Christofias, was elected as Speaker. This position is being held for the first time by Akel. |
