Elections were held for the 56 members of Parliament representing the country’s Greek community following the premature dissolution of the House of Representatives. General elections were not normally due until August 1991. | |

The 1991 elections were held three months earlier than the normal expiry of Parliament.
The campaign, in which 296 candidates vied for the 56 seats at stake (there are 24 others set aside for the island’s Turkish Cypriot community, both they have boycotted Parliament since 1963), was predictably dominated by the “national question”. Among the major parties, both the right-wing Democratic Rally (DISY) and the communist AKEL-New Forces party supported President of the Republic George Vassiliou’s favouring United Nations-backed talks with the Turkish Cypriot community in the northern part of the country, with the centre-right Democratic Party (DIKO) of former President S. Kyprianou insisted that the solution of the Cyprus problem should by based on high-level agreements, United Nations resolutions, the respect of human rights and the withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus. The EDEK (Socialist) Party, for its part, supported the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions 541 and 550. DISY was led by Mr. Glafkos Clerides who stated that his party was ready to co-operate with all other political entities; for the election, it joined forces with the small Liberal Party so that the resulting coalition became known as DISY-L. On polling day, DISY-L, AKEL-New Forces and EDEK reinforced their parliamentary position by gaining House seats while DIKO was the main loser. In this context, no single party held the overall majority needed to elect a new President of Parliament when the House first met on 30 May. However, Mr. A. Ghalanos (DIKOS) was supported and voted not only by members of his own party but also by those of DISY, thus being chosen President of the House at this first sitting. |
