Purpose of elections:

  Elections were held for one-third (27) of the Senate seats of the normal expiry of the members' term of office.


Background and outcome of elections:

  Voters went to the polls on 12 November 2000 to elect one-third of the 81 seats in the Senate. Former Foreign Minister Josef Zieleniec, a member of the opposition four-party coalition, was the only candidate to receive more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round. After the second round, on 19 November 2000, the same liberal coalition took 16 out of the 26 seats that were at stake. The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) won eight seats, while the ruling Social Democrats took only one and one independent candidate won the last one.
