Voters went to the polls on 26 October 2002 in the first round of the elections for one-third of the 81 members of the Senate.
Only 24.1 percent of eligible voters cast ballots with only one seat decided outright, as the controversial director of TV Nova and independent candidate Mr. Vladimir Zelezny won in the district in which he was running. The remaining 26 seats were allotted in a runoff held on 1 November 2002. Voter turnout for the second round was 32.55 per cent. The Social Democratic Party (CSSD) was voted out in four of 11 constituencies it held and now has 11 senators. The main opposition Civic Democratic Party (ODS) won in nine constituencies, picking up four seats for a total of 26 seats, becoming the first political force in the Senate. The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSCM) won one seat and now controls three seats. Seven seats went to independents or candidates representing hitherto extra-parliamentary parties. |
