  Sénat

Dates of elections / renewal (from/to):

  24 September 1989

Purpose of elections:

Elections were held for one-third of the seats in the Senate on the normal expiry of the members’ term of office. This time, 102 seats were renewed.

Background and outcome of elections:

In the 1989 partial Senate elections, one-third of the seats were up for renewal. Altogether 102 seats were contested by 466 candidates. Polling results proved particularly favorable to the Rally for the Republic (Rassemblement pour la République – RPR) group, which raised its overall total by 10 seats to arrive at 91.

A total of 58 Senators were re-elected and 44 were newcomers. On 2 October, Mr. Alain Poher (Union centriste) was re-elected Senate President. With the addition of two seats for French citizens residing abroad, the overall membership of the Senate increased from 320 to 322 as compared to the previous (1986) partial elections.
