Chamber:
  Sénat

Dates of elections / renewal (from/to):

  27 September 1992

Purpose of elections:

Elections were held for one-third of the seats in the Senate on the normal expiry of the members’ term of office. This time, 102 seats were renewed.

Background and outcome of elections:

In the 1992 partial Senate elections, one-third of the seats were up for renewal. Altogether 102 seats were contested by 558 candidates. Polling results did not markedly change the political make-up of the Upper House, as the opposition maintained its majority position. With a gain of five seats, the Socialist group climbed to second in strength behind the Rally for the Republic (RPR) group. The Union of Republicans and independents incurred the biggest loss (five seats).

A total of 59 Senators were re-elected and 43 were newcomers. On 2 October, Mr. René Monori (Union Centriste) was elected Senate President succeeding Mr. Alain Poher, who had held the post for 23 years.
