Elections were held for all the elective seats of Parliament on the normal expiry of the member's term of office. | |

Parliamentary elections had previously taken place in July 1994. Two months later, Mr. Teburoro Tito of the Maneaban Te Mauri (MTM) grouping was elected President of the Republic. On taking office, he declared that reducing Kiribati's dependence on foreign aid would be one of the Government's major objectives. The President also announced his intention to pursue civil and criminal action against members of the previous administration for alleged misuse of public funds while in office.
Following the two rounds of parliamentary polling on 23 and 30 September 1998, both the ruling MTM and the opposition led by the National Progressive Group reportedly lost seats to independent candidates. While there are no formally organized political parties in Kiribati, loose groupings of individuals supporting similar policies do exist, the most prominent being the MTM. |
