Chamber:
  Landtag

Dates of elections / renewal (from/to):

  7 February 1993

Purpose of elections:

Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament on the normal expiry of the members’ term of office.

Background and outcome of elections:

The 25 Landtag seats were once again contested by the two traditional parties – Fatherland Union (VU) and Progressive Citizens’ Party (FBP) which have governed in coalition for years, as well as by the more liberal, ecological Free List (FL). Among campaign issues, all three groups supported the country’s joining the European Economic Area (EEA), as approved by the electorate in a December 1992 referendum. They differed, however, as to how Liechtenstein’s customs union agreement with neighbouring Switzerland (which had rejected the EEA) should be negotiated. Altogether 63 candidates (including 13 women) were in contention.

On polling day, a historic breakthrough occurred as the FL became the first third party to gain parliamentary representation. The conservative FBP, for its part, maintained its 12 seats to supplant the centrist VU as leading Landtag party. In this position, it had the right to designate the Head of Government; this post went to Mr. Markus Büchel, who succeeded Mr. Hans Brunhart (VU)
