Purpose of elections:

  Elections were held for the 40 popularly chosen members of Parliament on the normal expiry of their term of office.


Background and outcome of elections:

  Maldives became a full member of the British Commonwealth in June 1985. The President of the Republic, Mr. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, was last re-elected for a five-year term on 23 September 1988. There are no political parties and parliamentary candidates thus run in a individual capacity. The members of the Cabinet are individually responsible to the Majlis.
