Purpose of elections:
	Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament on the normal expiry of the members' term of office.
Background and outcome of elections:
	On Friday 19 November 1999, 127 registered candidates contested 40 out of the 50 seats in the Parliament, the People's Majlis. Two candidates had already been elected unopposed and eight members had been appointed by the President of the Republic. As there are no political parties in the Maldives, parliamentary candidates run in an individual capacity. The poll was monitored by a five-member group of international observers from South-Asian countries, who confirmed that the electoral process had been carried out in complete conformity with the Electoral Law. Some 259 ballot boxes were placed in 200 inhabited islands, where 128,000 people were eligible to vote. The turnout was estimated at 77.4%. The new Parliament will begin its five-year term on 27 February 2000.
