General elections had previously been held in November 1995. Shortly thereafter, President of the Republic Amata Kabua was re-elected for a fifth presidential term. However, in December 1996, he died following a brief illness and was succeeded by his cousin, paramount chief Imata Kabua. The latter was elected on 13 January 1997 by the Nitijela, defeating its Speaker Kessai Note and Mr. Wilfred Kendall, a former ambassador. Mr. Kendall is currently Minister of Justice in the nine-member Cabinet.
The Nitijela is advised by the House of Iroij, comprising 12 traditional leaders. Its members sit as independents. |
