  Congress

Dates of election / renewal (from/to):
  8 March 2005

Purpose of elections:
Elections were held for 10 single-member constituency seats in the Congress on the normal expiry of the members' term of office.

Background and outcome of elections:
Citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia went to the polls to elect their representatives to the unicameral Congress on 8 March 2005.

Since there are no political parties, all twenty-three candidates for the ten seats in contention ran as independents.

In this nation, composed of small islands scattered across the Pacific Ocean, approximately 80,000 of the 110,000 citizens are eligible voters. Due to the difficult geographical conditions, election officials struggled to get ballot boxes to all polling stations, notably to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands for Chuukese citizens residing there. Some overseas residents said they were disappointed to find that their name was not on the electoral list. No major incident was recorded.

Eight of the 10 newly-elected senators were in the outgoing Senate, while two senators from Chuuk took the oath of office for the first time. As in the last elections, no women were elected.

The ten members joined the four 'members at large' to hold the first session of Congress on 11 May 2005, at which Mr. Peter M. Christian was reelected as speaker.
