In the 1998 general elections, the ruling National and Democratic Union (UND) gained three seats over its previous total to capture all 18 in Parliament.
The first round of voting on 1 February resulted in 15 outright winners (those obtaining an absolute majority); among these was the outgoing Speaker, Mr. Jean-Louis Campora. The two other competing lists of the National Union for the Future of Monaco (UNAM) and the Rally for the Monegasque Family failed to obtain any seats. In the second round, three UND candidates, three from UNAM and one independent stayed in contention. The new National Council comprises eight new members and 10 incumbents. Of the 11 women candidates, four won seats as against one in the previous poll. On 19 February, Mr. Michel Lévêque was designated as the Minister of State (head of the four-member Council of Government); the Council wields executive power under the authority of the Head of State, Prince Rainier III. |
