Chamber:
  Parliament

Dates of elections / renewal (from/to):

  14 November 1992

Purpose of elections:

Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament on the normal expiry of the members’ term of office.

Background and outcome of elections:

Nauru became independent in January 1968, and from the beginning its political life was dominated by President of the Republic Hammer DeRoburt, who was ultimately forced to resign in August 1989 after defeat in parliamentary vote of no confidence. The island’s economy is based on phosphate rock, which constitutes four-fifths of the surface area and is the sole source of export earnings.

On polling day, all parliamentarians were elected as independents. On 18 November, the newly elected Parliament re-elected Mr. Bernard Dowiyogo as President of the Republic, by 10 votes to seven. Mr. Dowiyogo, who had first been chosen in December 1989, announced a new six-member Cabinet the following day.
