Elections were held for 46 seats in the Senate on the normal expiry of the member’s term of office.

Background and outcome of elections:

In accordance with the electoral laws, the National Assembly and each of Pakistan’s four Provincial Assemblies participated in choosing the new Senate members.

On polling day (14 March 1991), the IDA, swept to victory as it had five months earlier in the National Assembly elections, capturing 24 of the 46 seats at stake to only five for the PPP. The latter again accused the Government of Prime Minister Sharif of intimidation and vote rigging. The outcome nevertheless enable the ruling coalition to emerge with a solid majority in both Houses of Parliament.
