The 1994 election date was set one month before the polling, on 21 January. Opposing the ruling New Democratic Party (NDP) of Prime Minister James Mitchell was an alliance formed by the Saint Vincent Labour Party (SVLP) and the Movement for National Unity (MNU), headed by Mr. Vincent Beache. These two groups had demanded the Government’s resignation in July 1991.
The electoral campaign was marred by violence which caused one fatality. Mr. Mitchell stood on the centrist NDP’s platform of supporting political unity of the Caribbean (and especially the Windward Islands) and free enterprise, also promising to seek the assistance of the European Union in order to restructure the country’s banana (the principal cash crop) industry. The opposition alliance matched the ruling party by fielding 15 candidates – nine by the moderate socialist SVLP and six by the moderate leftist MNU. The NDP’s parliamentary majority was reduced on polling day as its total fell from 15 seats to 12. Opposition members returned included Mr. Beache and MNU leader Ralph Gonsalves but not SVLP leader Stanley John. Prime Minister Mitchell embarked on his third five-year term at the head of an 11-member Cabinet. |
