Chamber:
  Consiglio grande e generale

Dates of elections / renewal (from/to):

  30 May 1993

Purpose of elections:

Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament on the normal expiry of the members’ term of office.

Background and outcome of elections:

As a result of a political crisis in March 1992, the ruling coalition of the Christian Democratic Party (PDCS) and the Progressive Democratic Party (PPDS – the Communist Party until 1990) came to an end as the former deemed the arrangement outdated in view of the demise of communism in Europe. The PDCS then formed a new coalition with the Socialist Party (PSS).

There were altogether 272 candidates for the 60 seats at stake. On polling day, the new ruling coalition’s majority was reconfirmed although the PDCS and the PSS each dropped a seat. The PPDS, which had previously been in power for 14 years, entered the opposition, winning 11 seats. The elections also saw the entry into Parliament for the first time of three smaller parties, which totalled nine seats.
