Chamber:
  Assemblée nationale

Dates of elections / renewal (from/to):

  4 March 1990
18 March 1990

Purpose of elections:

Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament on the normal expiry of the members’ term of office.

Background and outcome of elections:

In the 1990 elections, some 230 candidates contested the National Assembly’s 77 seats. As at the previous (March 1985) general elections, several individuals ran for the same seat in certain constituencies, with up to six in some constituencies of Lomé, the capital. While all claimed to support the ruling Rassemblement du peuple togolais (Rally of the Togolese People - RPT), the country’s sole legal party, the RPT did not itself put forward the candidatures. The Interior Ministry announced that "the democratization process which has begun is an irreversible one and this is a true electoral campaign".

Sixty-nine and eight Deputies were reportedly elected in the two rounds of voting on 4 and 18 March, respectively; a high percentage of these were newcomers to Parliament.

On 3 April, the new Assembly was officially installed by the President of the Republic, General Gnassingbe Eyadéma, who is also President of the Council of Ministers.
