Purpose of elections:
	Elections were held for all the seats in the new National Assembly on the normal expiry of the members' term of office.
Background and outcome of elections:
	Some 2,270,000 registered voters were expected to vote for 81 members of the parliament in the March legislative election boycotted by opposition politicians. The eight opposition parties argued that talks to resolve a political crisis following veteran President Gnassingbe Eyadema's disputed June 1998 re-election must first be concluded. The opposition Union of Forces for Change (UFC) claimed that its candidate, Gilchirst Olympio, who lives in exile in Ghana, was the winner in the said election. The results of the presidential election have been questioned not only by opposition groups who alleged massive fraud but also by international observers. Only 109 candidates contested the 21 March poll, 80 from the ruling Togolese Peoples' Rally (RPT), 11 from the Convention of New Forces (CFN) of Foreign Minister Joseph Kokou-Koffigoh and 8 from the Pan African Environmentalist Party (PEP). All these parties are allied to the RPT. There were also a dozen independent candidates. The government postponed the election from March 7 to 21 to give the opposition more time to register its candidates. The Togolese People's Rally of President Eyadema swept 79 of the 81 seats while independent candidates won two seats. On 21 May, President Eyadema named Mr. Koffi Eugene Adoboli as the new Prime Minister replacing Mr. Kwassi Klutse. The new Government was formed on 18 June.
