In the 25 July 2002 elections, some 39 candidates competed for the parliamentary seats across the eight islands, an increase in the number of candidates in previous elections. All the outgoing MPs stood for re-election. As Tuvalu has no party system, all individuals ran on their own.
About 5,000 voters were registered to vote and some 80 per cent actually voted in the elections. The outgoing Prime Minister, Mr Koloa Talake was voted out of office on his home island of Vaitupu. He was one of six former members of Parliament who lost their seats. The outgoing Speaker, Mr Toumu Sione, was also voted out. On 2 August 2002, the members of Parliament elected Mr Saufatu Sopoanga, who had been Minister of Finance in the previous administration, as the country's new Prime Minister. He named his Cabinet the following day. |
