Purpose of elections:
	Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament on the normal expiry of the members' term of office.
Background and outcome of elections:
	On 26 June 2001, parliamentary elections were held to select the MPs who would form the country's seventh parliament since gaining independence in 1962. At stake were 214 out of 295 seats (the other seats are reserved for special interest groups such as the army, youth and women and are filled by separate elections). On 22 June 2001, the Army Council, the People's Defence Forces, had elected the 10 officers to represent the army in the Parliament. The younger brother of President Yoweri Museveni, General Saleh, was one of the elected. Reports of violence and intimidation marred the run-up to the elections, with incidents ranging from personal vendettas to alleged harassment of opposition candidates by agents of the State. At least seven people were shot dead in election-related violence across the country and 150 people were taken into custody for alleged violence and malpractice that included issuing of extra voter's cards and voting more than once at different polling stations. Among those arrested was the State Minister for Gender, Youth and Culture whose bodyguard is alleged to have shot a supporter of a rival candidate. The direct election process was observed by 150 foreign election monitors, along with 18,000 agents from the independent election monitoring body, NEMGROUP. The day was declared a holiday to enable people to cast their votes The polls came three months after President Yoweri Museveni had won a final term in office with almost 70 percent of votes cast in a presidential election. During the electoral campaign, the President had urged the voters to choose members of Parliament he could work with. And the results showed that voters had done so, returning to power a Parliament whose members are closely linked to the President Museveni, even if nearly a quarter of his outgoing cabinet (12 ministers) lost their seats. In the newly elected Parliament, supporters of the no-party "Movement" secured a majority, winning more than 200 seats. The new members of Parliament were sworn in on 3 and 4 July 2001 and the outgoing Deputy Speaker, Mr. Edward Ssekandi, was elected Speaker.
