Mandate The Committee examines matters concerning health, social affairs, the status of women and the rights of the child. It proposes laws, assesses cases, reports to parliament in plenary session and oversees executive action.
Membership The Committee has 17 members, who are elected by consensus for a term of office equal to their parliamentary mandate. <p>Composition by sex: 13 men (76%); 4 women (24%)
Working methods Subjects for discussion may be presented by the government, parliamentarians and citizens.The Committee's work is conducted through hearings. It may summon any individual who is able to provide it with information. It may also conduct enquiries. Deliberations are carried out in camera in the first instance and a presentation thereof is subsequently made to the plenary session of parliament for the final vote. <p>FUNCTIONING <br>The Committee receives its own budget from the National Assembly. <p>CHALLENGES FACING THE COMMITTEE <br>Socio-economic and cultural problems.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee may set up ad hoc committees to look at cross-cutting issues.
Relations with external bodies The Committee works together with the government and the Ministry for Social Action and Families.
Subjects dealt with - Reproductive health: <br>- The human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and promoting human rights.
