Mandate This Committee is empowered to deal with all matters related to the protection of human rights as provided by the Constitution, the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international instruments.
Membership The Committee is composed of thirteen members, selected by a resolution of the Senate along with other members determined by the President of the Senate.
Working methods The Committee considers cases of human rights violations reported by the general public and organises public hearings in order to ensure a continuous dialogue with human rights NGOs across the country.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee cooperates closely with its counterparts in the House of Representatives.
Relations with external bodies The Committee liases and cooperates with local and intergovernmental organisations of various human rights groups with the purpose of promoting and protecting human rights.
Subjects dealt with These include: gender discrimination; judicial oppression; economic exploitation; and political oppression.
