THE IPU CALLS ON INDONESIAN AUTHORITIES NOT TO EXECUTE THREE CHRISTIAN INDONESIAN CITIZENS

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has consistently called on all parliaments to work actively towards the worldwide abolition of the death penalty or at least the establishment of a moratorium on executions pending the complete abolition of the death penalty. It therefore calls on the Indonesian authorities not to execute three Christian Indonesian citizens condemned to death.

The world organization of parliaments considers that their execution would be contrary to international human rights standards which encourage the abolition of the death penalty, and would run counter to the spirit of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Indonesia is a party.

The IPU believes also that their execution would undermine the efforts made by Indonesia to foster interfaith dialogue and tolerance, efforts which are particularly important at the present time.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 146 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
