THE IPU CONDEMNS THE MILITARY COUP D'ETAT IN FIJI

The Inter-Parliamentary Union condemns the recent military coup d'état in Fiji and the dissolution of the Fiji parliament. The world organization of parliaments considers that any process which seeks to overturn a government by unconstitutional and undemocratic means is unacceptable. The IPU is particularly concerned by the fact that this is the fourth coup d'état in Fiji since 1987.

The IPU calls for the restoration of constitutional order in Fiji and an immediate return to democratic rule built upon the foundation of an elected parliament. It stands ready to offer its services to Fiji, as it has in the past, with a view to the restoration of democracy.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 148 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
