At the invitation of the Parliament of Indonesia, the Inter-Parliamentary Union will hold its 116th Assembly from 29 April to 4 May 2007 at the International Convention Centre in Nusa Dua, on the island of Bali. The inaugural ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, 29 April, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the President of the IPU, Mr. Pier Ferdinando Casini, the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Mr. Agung Laksono, and the IPU Secretary General, Mr. Anders B. Johnsson. More than 700 legislators from the 148 Member Parliaments of the IPU and several special guests are expected to attend this event. The main theme to be debated by the parliamentarians at the Assembly will be "Global warming - ten years after Kyoto". The three IPU standing committees will be looking at job creation and employment security, peaceful coexistence between religious communities and beliefs, and the question of universal democratic and electoral standards. An emergency item may be added to the agenda, on a topic to be decided on Monday, 30 April at 4.30 p.m. So far, one proposal has been received: combating financing of terrorism and the need to strengthen international cooperation, presented by the Parliament of India. Two panel discussions will be held on Wednesday, 2 May. The first, which is scheduled to take place in the morning, will discuss violence against children and is entitled Making School Safe for Children. It will be attended by the UNICEF representative, actress Sarah Jones. The second, slated for the afternoon, will address the question of global warming. It will be attended by Dr. John W. Zillman, senior member of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and former President of the World Meteorological Organization. The Meeting of Women Parliamentarians will convene on Sunday, 29 April, from 9.30 a.m. In the afternoon, it will examine the question of political parties and women's representation. The Nusa Dua Assembly will also provide an opportunity for delegates to hold bilateral meetings and seek ways of resolving conflicts in various parts of the world. The IPU Committee on Middle East Questions will also meet on this occasion. In addition, the IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians will continue to examine many cases involving violations of the human rights of parliamentarians in all regions of the world.
