116th IPU ASSEMBLY TO DISCUSS INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION TO COMBAT TERRORISM

The more than 600 legislators from over 100 national parliaments currently attending the 116th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union decided today to discuss an emergency item: International cooperation to combat terrorism, its root causes and its financing, including cross-border funding.

The item was proposed by the delegations of India, Algeria, Indonesia and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Mexican delegation had suggested that the Assembly discuss The building of border walls: a human rights violation, but withdrew its proposal.

This morning, the Speaker of the Indonesian Chamber of Representatives, Mr. Agung Laksono, was elected president of the 116th IPU Assembly.

In other developments, the IPU Governing Council decided today to affiliate the Parliament of Afghanistan, and the Parliament of Fiji was suspended.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 148 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
