PARLIAMENTARY MEETING ON THE OCCASION OF THE
WORLD FOOD SUMMIT: FIVE YEARS LATER

The Italian Parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) are organizing a parliamentary meeting on Tuesday 11th June 2002 in Rome at the occasion of the World Food Summit: five years later.

The inaugural ceremony will start at 10 a.m. on the premises of the Senate (Palazzo Madama), in the presence of the Speaker of the Italian Senate, Mr. Marcello Pera, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Pierferdinando Casini, the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Mr. Jacques Diouf, the Chairman of the Italian delegation to the IPU, Mr. Antonio Martino, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs. Marie Robinson.

The parliamentary meeting provides an opportunity for members of parliaments to build political support for the fight against hunger. They will debate the new challenges to the achievement of the World Food Summit's goals.

The main items will be introduced by one expert: Prof. Jeffey Sachs, Director of the International Development Center of Harvard University. The UN Special Rapporteur for the Right to Food, Prof. Jean Ziegler, and the IPU Secretary General, Mr. Anders B. Johnsson, will also be present.

The IPU was instrumental in ensuring active parliamentary involvement in the World Food Summit back in 1996 and organized a parliamentary follow-up Conference in Rome in 1998.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, the IPU, the oldest multilateral organisation, currently has 142 affiliated national parliaments and five regional assemblies as associate members. The organisation of the world's parliaments also has a Liaison Office with the United Nations in New York.
