IPU CALLS ON GOVERNMENTS TO ADOPT TIMEBOUND TARGETS AT
WORLD SUMMIT ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Speaking today in Bali (Indonesia) at the last preparatory Committee for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Ms. Iris Indira Murti, Indonesian MP and Head of the delegation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), noted that the Draft Plan of Implementation for the Johannesburg Summit falls too short of specific targets, especially in the critical area of sustainable consumption and production patterns. On behalf of the IPU, Ms. Murti called for "more pro-active policy measures" to be included in the Summit's outcome documents.

In her statement before the ministers in attendance, Ms. Murti, reaffirmed the important role that parliaments will continue to play in implementing the policy recommendations of Agenda 21. To help sensitize parliamentarians to the messages that will come out of the Johannesburg Summit, the IPU, in cooperation with the Parliament of South Africa, will organize a two-day meeting on implementation issues (29 and 30 August), Ms. Murti announced.

In her concluding words, the Head of the IPU delegation pleaded for "Johannesburg to turn the tide and spark a heightened sense of awareness among the people that we cannot continue to live beyond the planet's carrying capacity. We want a world in which we do not live for a moment's instant gratification at the expense of others; a world in which we aim for higher values in which the common good will prevail."

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, the IPU, the oldest multilateral organisation, currently has 142 affiliated national parliaments and five regional assemblies as associate members. The organisation of the world's parliaments also has a Liaison Office with the United Nations in New York.
