THE COMMITTEE ON THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF PARLIAMENTARIANS EXAMINES 28 PUBLIC CASES IN 17 COUNTRIES
The Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is meeting today and until 27 January at the IPU's Headquarters, the House of Parliaments, in Geneva. During its 108th session, the Committee will examine 52 cases, 28 of which are public, covering human rights issues involving legislators from Belarus, Burundi, Cambodia, Colombia, Ecuador, Eritrea, Honduras, Indonesia, Israel/Palestine, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Rwanda, Turkey and Zimbabwe. The public report currently under consideration by the Committee is available at the IPU.
Established in 1976, the Committee meets in camera four times a year. The following parliamentarians are taking part in the present session: Mr. Mahamane Ousmane (President of the National Assembly of Niger, President of the Committee), Mrs. Veronika Nedvedova (Czech Republic, Vice-President of the Committee), Mrs. Ann Clwyd (member of the House of Commons, United Kingdom), Mr. Luis Hierro (President of the General Assembly and the Senate of Uruguay), and Mr. Manouchehr Mottaki (Member of the Majlis Shoraye Eslami of the Islamic Republic of Iran, substitute member for the Asia Pacific Group).
Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 140 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
