THE COMMITTEE ON THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF PARLIAMENTARIANS EXAMINES 26 PUBLIC CASES IN 17 COUNTRIES

The Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will meet at The House of Parliaments, the IPU Headquarters in Geneva, from 11 to 14 July 2005, for its 110th session. The Committee will examine 56 cases, 26 of which are public, covering human rights issues involving legislators from Belarus, Burundi, Cambodia, Colombia, Ecuador, Eritrea, Honduras, Indonesia, Israel/Palestine, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Rwanda, Turkey and Zimbabwe. The public report currently under consideration by the Committee is available at the IPU.

Established in 1976, the Committee meets in camera four times a year. The following parliamentarians are taking part in the present session: Mrs. Ann Clwyd (President of the Committee, member of the House of Commons, United Kingdom), Mrs. Veronika Nedvedova (Czech Republic, Vice-President of the Committee), Mr. Mahamane Ousmane (President of the National Assembly of Niger), Senator Baldo Prokuriça (Chile, substitute member for the Latin American and Caribbean Group), Senator Sharon Carstairs (Canada, substitute member for the Twelve Plus Group) and Mr. Manouchehr Mottaki (Member of the Majlis Shoraye Eslami of the Islamic Republic of Iran, substitute member for the Asia Pacific Group).


Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 141 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
