IPU CONDEMNS MURDER OF LEBANESE MP WALID EIDO

"The Inter-Parliamentary Union strongly condemns the killing of the Lebanese MP, Walid Eido", said the President of the IPU, Mr. Pier Ferdinando Casini. Mr. Eido, along with his son and at least eight other persons, died as a car bomb exploded in Beirut last night.

"This is the third time a Lebanese legislator has been murdered in less than two years, and it is outrageous", added the IPU.

The IPU sends its condolences to the Lebanese Parliament and to Mr. Eido's family, as well as to the families of the other victims of the blast.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 147 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
