IPU CONDEMNS KILLING OF KENYAN MP

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) strongly condemns the killing of Mr. Mugabe Ware, opposition member of the Parliament of Kenya.

According to press reports, Mr. Ware was shot dead last night and is the first leading politician to have died amid violence triggered by the disputed elections last month.

The IPU conveys its condolences to the Parliament of Kenya and to Mr. Ware’s family.

The world organization of parliaments has always condemned all forms of political violence and it is alarmed at the emerging cycle of violence in Kenya, said the President of the IPU, Mr. Pier Ferdinando Casini. He calls on all parties concerned to make a determined effort to put an immediate end to the violence.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 146 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
