IPU CONDEMNS KILLING OF A SECOND KENYAN MP

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) strongly condemns the killing of a second member of the Parliament of Kenya, Mr. David Too of the Orange Democratic Movement.

Mr. Too was shot dead by a policeman on Thursday. According to press reports the police say the killing was the result of a domestic dispute whereas the opposition claims it was a political assassination.

Following the killing of Mr. Mugabe Ware, Mr. Too is the second MP to be killed in less than a week in Kenya amidst a wave of violence triggered by the disputed presidential elections held last month.

The President of the IPU, Mr. Pier Ferdinando Casini, expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in Kenya, saying that IPU has always condemned all forms of political violence. President Casini reiterates his call for calm and urges the parties concerned to give the mediation efforts spearheaded by former UN chief, Kofi Annan, a chance to succeed.

IPU conveys its condolences to the Parliament of Kenya and to Mr. Too’s family.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 146 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
