IPU CONDEMNS COUP D’ETAT IN MAURITANIA

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has learnt with dismay of the military coup which took place in Mauritania on 6 August 2008. It condemns strongly this flagrant subversion of the democratic order in Mauritania. In this day and age, the usurpation of power by the army is totally unacceptable. The IPU therefore calls for a speedy return to constitutional rule in Mauritania and urges all forces of democracy to assist in this process. The IPU stands ready to contribute to that endeavour.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 150 affiliated parliaments and eight regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
