IPU PRESIDENT CALLS FOR AN END TO VIOLENCE IN SYRIA

The President of the IPU, Speaker Abdulwahad Radi of Morocco, urged the Syrian authorities to heed the call from the Arab League and to implement fully and speedily the work plan it had agreed on 2 November. He expressed support for the Arab League's efforts to promote a genuine and inclusive political dialogue.

The IPU President declared that all violence must stop immediately to open the way for a credible Syrian-led process of comprehensive political change that will address the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 159 affiliated parliaments and nine regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
