CONTRIBUTION OF PARLIAMENTS TO COMBATING INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM AND ADDRESSING ITS CAUSES TO BE DEBATED AT THE 107th INTER-PARLIAMENTARY CONFERENCE IN MARRAKECH

The 672 MPs from 130 countries gathered at the Marrakech Palais des Congrès until 23 March on the occasion of tthe 107th Conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, opted by consensus to include on their agenda a supplementary item entitled "Terrorism – a threat to democracy, human rights and civil society: The contribution of parliaments to combating international terrorism and addressing its causes in order to maintain international peace and security".

Mr Abdelwahed Radi, President of the Chamber of Representatives of Morocco, was elected President of the Conference.

Two other topics will be examined at the Conference, mainly the role of parliaments in developing public policy in an era of globalisation and parliamentary support for the Kyoto Protocol.

Mr Mohammed Bouzoubaa, Moroccan Minister for Relations with Parliaments, will address the Conference tomorrow (Tuesday) together with the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koichiro Matsuura.

A discussion panel on "The worst forms of child labour" has been scheduled for Wednesday 20 March, in cooperation with the ILO. It will be chaired HRH Princess Lalla Meryem.


Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, the IPU, the oldest multilateral organisation, currently has 142 affiliated national parliaments and five regional assemblies as associate members. The organisation of the world's parliaments also has a Liaison Office with the United Nations in New York.
