IN EMERGING DEMOCRACIES IN NORTH AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST

The 124th IPU Assembly decided today to add to its agenda an emergency item entitled: Strengthening democratic reform in emerging democracies, including North Africa and the Middle East, which was submitted by the delegations of Indonesia, Iran (Islamic Rep. of) and New Zealand.

In the morning, the Speaker of the Host Parliament, Mr. José Muñoz Molina, was elected President of the 124th IPU Assembly. With the affiliation of the Parliaments of Trinidad and Tobago and Micronesia in Panama, the world organization of parliaments currently has 157 Member Parliaments.

Over 1,300 delegates, including 38 Speakers and close to 600 legislators from 116 countries are meeting at the Atlapa Convention Centre in Panama City until 20 April.

In addition to the emergency item, the lawmakers will examine four other ítems. The general debate will focus on Parliamentary accountability: Living up to people's expectations and the three Standing Committees will look at preventing electoral violence and ensuring a smooth transition of power, sustainable development through the management of natural resources and transparency in political party funding.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU - the oldest multilateral political organisation in the world - currently brings together 157 affiliated parliaments and nine associated regional assemblies. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
