The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has condemned the violent attack on Canada’s Parliament, which killed two people yesterday, and is expressing its solidarity with the Canadian people and their representatives at this very difficult time.

“An attack on parliament is an attack on democracy itself. We are shocked and saddened by the events in Ottawa. We stand by all Canadians in condemning this wanton act of violence against an institution that represents the will of the people,” said IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong.

Our hearts go out to the family of the soldier who was killed while standing guard at the National War Memorial, a short distance from the parliament building.
