Press release of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
Parliaments have a primary role in addressing the most serious problems of our age. For this reason they are meeting at the end of November in Rome for a Specialised Conference organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU - the representative body of the world's Parliaments) with the collaboration of the FAO and the Italian Parliament. The Conference has the financial support of the Italian Foreign Ministry. The parliamentarians will also have an audience by His Holiness Pope John Paul II on Monday 30 November. Between 29 November and 2 December , some 260 parliamentarians from over 70 countries will address some of the central themes at the end of the century: hunger and malnutrition which afflict a vast proportion of humanity, and economic development that must not spoil the environment but rather defend it along with our natural resources. The first IPU Conference on this theme was held in Rome two years ago during the FAO World Food Summit. On that occasion, MPs from the world's parliaments pledged to promote legislation and to work with individual governments and international organisations to pursue the Summit's goals. The inaugural session and the first day's proceedings of the Specialised Conference will be held in the Chamber of Deputies, Montecitorio. Between 30 November and 2 December, the Conference will take place at the FAO. On 29 November at 10.30 a.m., the inaugural session will begin with interventions by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Luciano Violante, the President of the Senate Nicola Mancino, the Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema, the Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini, the President of the IPU Council Miguel Angel Martínez (Spain), the FAO Director General Jacques Diouf and the Chairman of the Italian IPU Group Antonio Martino.
