The annual parliamentary event on the occasion of the 57th session of Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will be held in New York on 5 March 2013. The event, hosted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), will focus on Parliamentary strategies for tackling violence against women and girls.
The meeting will focus on strategies to prevent, protect against and prosecute all forms of violence against women and girls and will aim at identifying priorities for parliaments to support progress. The morning session will discuss how parliamentarians’ motivation and responsibilities create and sustain the political will necessary to address the issue. Drawing on promising parliamentary practices, this session will also discuss parliamentary strategies for a strong legislative framework and an effective implementation of laws and policies to end violence against women and girls. The afternoon session will be dedicated to discussing violence against women in the political arena. It will focus on measures that can be put forward to eliminate such acts of violence against women for political reasons, for their link to political activities or for their involvement in politics.
The meeting will therefore provide an opportunity to contribute to the debates at the CSW whose priority theme this year is Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls.
Besides its main parliamentary event, the IPU is organizing two side events:
- Women in Politics: Latest trends (6 March, 4:45 – 6:00 p.m., Conference Room B, English only).
- Partnerships to address violence against women: Parliamentary caucuses as a platform (6 March, 6:30 – 7:45 p.m., Conference Room B, English only).
The IPU is also partnering with a number of international partners in organizing a panel discussion on child marriage entitled “Too Young to Wed: Working together to Address Child Marriage”. This event will take place on Thursday, 7 March from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium, at UN Headquarters. The panel will be held in English only.
