Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2006, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was opened for signature in March 2007 and has entered into force in May 2008.  The purpose of the Convention is to ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy the same rights and opportunities as everyone else and are able to lead their lives as full citizens who can make valuable contributions to society if given the same opportunities as others.

The regional seminar on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is organised by the British IPU Group in cooperation with the IPU. It aims to inform parliamentarians about this important human rights treaty, to encourage its ratification and implementation.
