The Conference on Africa and Migration: challenges, problems, solutions will be held in Rabat (Morocco) from 22 to 24 May 2008. It is intended primarily for African parliaments. The Conference is being organized by the African Parliamentary Union (APU) in partnership with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and in cooperation with the International Labour Office (ILO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR).
Given the enormous increase over the past 50 years in the movement of people across borders in search of employment, migration has moved to the top of policy agendas in many countries of origin, transit and destination, and it has consequently become a major challenge for African policymakers. The primary objective of the Conference is therefore to deliberate on those challenges and the ways and means of managing migration for the mutual benefit of society, migrants and African States.
The question of the participation of migrants in host societies and combating discrimination will also be addressed.
